The Northern Avenue Bridge is set to get a major facelift and plans for the redesign were left up to submissions from the public.
Over 100 designs were submitted and are far from your average bridge, with ideas ranging from outrageous parks, farms, galleries and many more.
The final four designs have now been chosen and announced by the Mayor and the Boston Society of Architects and from these there will be the final designs for the future of the bridge.
The Northern Avenue Bridge was originally constructed in 1908. It connected people, cyclists, cars and trains from one side of the Fort Point Channel to another and was closed in 2014. The closure was due to corrosion and fears for its safety and the possibility of it even collapsing into the water, but now the city is hoping to breathe new life into the structure.
One of the finalist designs was created by Rob Barella, a landscape engineer for Kyle Zick Landscape Architecture, who turned the new bridge into a park.
The design is for a rail-car bridge that includes terraces, floating island and green space that goes all the way down to water level.
Two of the other winners also make use of green space in their designs. The design titled the ‘Northern Avenue Botanical Bridge’ by Mazen Sakr and Aaron Bruckerhoff, includes an enclosed pedestrian walkway and a greenhouse botanical garden.
All of the designs are modern and inventive and create drastically different new uses for the iconic bridge.
The excitement surrounding this project is building and the final winner will be creating a truly unique new space in the Fort Point area.
Developers TCR Development and JB Ventures were approved for construction on the project in January 2014 and announced that construction will begin within the next two months and pre-sales of the units will begin shortly, starting at $2.5 million.
This Fort Point condo development will bring 9 luxury apartments to an already vibrant and developing real estate market within the area. The units include luxury amenities such as roof gardens, floor to ceiling windows, chef kitchens and spa-like bathrooms.
There will be retail space at the corner of Farnsworth and Congress on the ground floor, however what exactly will occupy that space is still undecided.
Completion of construction of the building is expected for October 2017.
For the first time in history, Boston will host the 2016 Grand Prix of the IndyCar Series. May of last year is when city officials announced the Boston race had been added to the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series season. The Grand Prix of Boston will be a three-day racing competition held in the streets of South Boston and specifically the Seaport.
The race will feature more than twenty of the world’s most talented drivers, and the event will span September 2nd – September 5th, 2016. INDYCAR and IndyCar Boston will offer multiple options of entertainment and activities before, during, and after the race for all ages.

It probably won’t be easy to get a table on this weekend but there are some great restaurant spots in the area including: Some of the restaurants in the area include Menton, Ocean Prime, and Strega Waterfront just to name a few.
If you are a part of the community that resides in the Seaport area you already have a front row seat or pretty close to it. Residents of the Twenty Two Liberty luxury condos and the 100 Pier 4 luxury apartments will be able to walk out their front doors to be a part of the action. And if all goes well and this becomes an annual stop on the racing schedule, future residents of 50 Liberty and Pier 4 will be right there with them.

The 48 loft-style condos being built at Fort Point Channel are the first for sale options in the area in the last 10 years and Boston Residential Group is now ready to start taking reservations on the new homes in the coming week. In an article last week on Curbed, they announced that prices would be starting at $499,900 for a studio according to their sources. If reports are true that the studios will be around 400 sq. ft. then we are talking a price per square foot of more than $1,200. The building will also offer 1 and 2 Bedroom homes as part of the 48,000 square foot historic warehouse redevelopment. Amenities will include a community roof deck, unit storage and a cutting edge restaurant on the ground floor. The homes themselves will take advantage of the lofted ceilings, expansive windows and historical details of the old industrial building.
319A will dwarf its neighboring 315 on A apartment building which is already completed. They are commanding rents from $2,785 per month for a studio to $5,115 for a 1 bedroom penthouse. The Fort Point Channel area is certainly one that is highly sought after and the prices will certainly reflect that as these 319A units become available.
